Trail Buddies is a brand new program that gives shelter dogs a much-needed break and the chance to meet wonderful new people like you! Enjoy the perks of bonding with a furry friend, getting some fresh air and knowing you're making a positive impact on their lives.

Calling all handy volunteers! We are installing new sound baffles to reduce noise in our dog kennels. Less noise means less stress, and less stress means more adoptions for our wonderful dogs!
As the nation’s largest funded adoption event, Empty the Shelters helps homeless pets find families by making adoption affordable for prospective pet owners. We do this by supporting participating organizations with reimbursement for each pet adopted.
This lifesaving reduced-fee adoption event is a Win-Win-Win:
Adopters win because BPF helps offset adoption fees, making it possible to take home a spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped pet who’s ready to be loved for $70 or less.
Shelters win because the event brings awareness and foot traffic, helping pets get adopted.
And, most importantly, every pet wins by finding
a loving home!
Mitchell County Animal Rescue is proud to participate in Empty the Shelters in 2026! Adoption fees for available dogs and cats are waived as part of this event.

Save the date! Spay-ghetti 2026 will be held at Mitchell Senior Center in Ledger, on March 28th, from 4:30 pm until 7pm! Dinners will be $10 (seniors), $12 (adults), $8 ( kids 12 & under) and include a choice of a vegan/gluten free pasta and sauce or spaghetti and meat sauce, a salad, bread, drink, and dessert (vegan and gluten free dessert options will also be available). Drive through take out is available.

Here at MCAR, we are raising money for veterinary treatments, because—listen carefully, darling—your health is the most important thing. I have survived many seasons and at least three questionable humans. Trust me.
Love is not just flowers and nonsense. Love is vet care, full bowls, warm places to nap, and people who show up when it matters most.

“Santa Paws” Pet Photo Shoot & Toys for Tails Donation Drive
Saturday, December 20 • 10:00 AM–1:00 PM
Spruce Pine, NC — Mitchell County Animal Rescue (MCAR) invites the community to celebrate the holiday spirit with our beloved Santa Paws Pet Photo Shoot and Toys for Tails donation drive on Saturday, December 20th from 10 AM to 1 PM.
Bring your furry companions for a festive photo with Santa Paws—who kindly requests no hippos this year, no matter how much you or your pets might “want a hippopotamus for Christmas”! A suggested donation of $5 will get your pet’s picture with Santa, with all proceeds supporting the lifesaving work of Mitchell County Animal Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
We are also collecting new pet toys for our Toys for Tails holiday drive. These gifts will help brighten the season for the cats and dogs spending their holidays in the shelter.

As part of the national Clear the Shelters initiative, we are holding an adoption event at the Bakersville Fire and Rescue.
Join us at the NC Rhododendron Festival Craft Fair
We will be offering a Rabies Clinic at the Buladean Community Center on Saturday, May 11, 9am - 12pm. This will be a rabies-only clinic. No other vaccinations will be available at this event. Rabies vaccinations are $10 each.
Pet food will be available for those in need and we will have a sign up for reduced cost Spay/Neuters.
